Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread While white bread works perfectly, feel free to experiment with some alternatives. Day-old bread is ideal for soaking as it's slightly drier.
  • 1 cup Nutella Using quality Nutella is key for achieving that creamy, chocolaty goodness.
  • 4 eggs These add richness—opt for large eggs for best results.
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk Whole milk offers the creamiest texture. You can substitute with half-and-half or even heavy cream for a richer experience if you like.
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable broth This enhances the egg mixture, making it more flavorful.
  • Butter Use it generously to grease the baking dish and add extra flavor.

Equipment

  • 11 x 7 inch baking dish
  • medium bowl
  • plastic wrap
  • foil
  • sifter

Method

  1. Butter an 11 x 7 inch baking dish to ensure the casserole doesn’t stick.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and vegetable broth until well combined. Set aside.
  3. Take 2 tablespoons of Nutella and spread it on each of the 8 slices of bread.
  4. Roll each slice up tightly like a cigar, with the Nutella filling tucked inside.
  5. Dip each rolled bread slice into the egg mixture, allowing them to soak briefly. Place them seam side down in your prepared dish, packing them in tightly.
  6. Gently pour any leftover custard over the rolled bread.
  7. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours—or better yet, overnight—to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the casserole for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden and delicious.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar and for an extra touch, drizzle melted Nutella on top. Enjoy with fresh sliced strawberries and/or bananas for added flavor.

Notes

Prepare this casserole the night before for enhanced flavor and a quick morning meal. To prevent sogginess, use day-old bread and cover with foil while baking to ensure it cooks evenly. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for later use.
